Author of Tracing Your East Anglian Ancestry (2009), Tracing Your House History (2013) and Writing Your Family History (2014) (Pen & Sword Books)
BA (Hons). MA. Post Grad Cert Ed. (Adults).
I have an academic background in History and Sociology and Politics and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education), which qualifies me to teach adults. I also have a Post-Graduate Certificate in Architectural Theory and Practice and will shortly have completed a second MA in Biography and Creative Non Fiction at UEA.
I have been conducting Family, House and Local History research full time professional basis since 1992, setting up my own research company in 1997. I began my research career by working at the Norfolk Record Office for six years as an archive assistant and researcher. Whist there I transcribed and indexed thousands of documents dating from the 16th century, including poor law records, probate records, coroner's inquests and quarter session court papers.
One of my specialties is writing and producing family and house history books for clients. I regularly contribute articles, expert answers and book reviews to national magazines and am frequently featured in newspapers, on radio and magazines as an expert and educator in the field. As well as a wide range of private clients across the world, I have assisted several authors, journalists and academic researchers with their background research, including the BBC Who Do You Think You Are? television series, on which I also appeared and The Mail on Sunday newspaper.
Oragnisations and business clients include: New England Historic Genealogical Society in America; Customised Heritage Tours in Australia, King William IV Inn at Sedgeford; Caistor Hall Hotel; local architects, property developers and solicitors; English Heritage; Zetica Ltd.; J.D. Weatherspoons and the Department of Demography, University of California, Berkley.
I have designed and developed family, house and local history courses at all levels from introductory to postgraduate across the country and online, including at the Society of Genealogists, University of East Anglia, Norfolk Family History Society, Adult Education and Library Services. My online courses are run through Pharos Tutors: www.pharostutors.com
I frequently give talks and workshops, including at the Who Do You Think You Are? Live show at Olympia and Society of Genealogists. I also run historical walks and talks. Recent events include themed walks for the Norwich Wine Festival and International Women’s Day.
In the past I have taught adults on Access, A Level, GCSE and NVQ courses in history and humanities related subjects through the Adult Education and HM Prison Services. Whilst working for the latter I received Home Office security clearance.
