I offer family history research and training tailored to a client's specific needs. Based in East Suffolk, I am within easy reach of several local archives, including all three branches of Suffolk Record Office (Ipswich, Lowestoft and Bury St. Edmunds) as well as those further afield in Norfolk and Essex. I am prepared to travel to more remote locations as required.
In much the same way as I arrived on the planet, I came to genealogy through a ‘chance encounter’ - a task set for me by my beloved father to unearth the identity of his birth parents.
What started out as a labour of love has since turned into an obsession upon which I spend most of my waking hours - and a fair number of those when I’m supposed to be asleep!
Following a long career in banking, I spent 5 years studying with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury, and have been awarded both the Higher Certificate in Genealogy and the Diploma in Genealogy. I am also a member of the Register of Qualified Genealogists and the Society of Genealogists, as well as being actively involved locally with the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group.
I’m now committed to encouraging others to discover the benefits of tracing their ancestry and, in the process, find out more about themselves and the world in which they live.
The services I provide through “Chance Encounters” range from individual research commissions to group training sessions in genealogy and personal development. The work I’ve undertaken to date convinces me that, not only at a societal level, but also at an individual level, the past is a window to the future.
