Giles is a barrister with over 15 years’ experience in researching family history. His clients have come from all areas of the British Isles, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and other parts of the world. He holds an Honours Degree in History from the University of Nottingham, and was Called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2006.
Although undertaking general research on families from the British Isles, he is based in London (with its access to The National Archives, the London archives, record offices and libraries), and has experience in most aspects of genealogical research, with a particular interest in armigerous ancestors, gentry, minor or parish gentry, yeomen, the Heraldic Visitations of England & Wales in the 16th and 17th Centuries, the Anglo-Irish, the succession to extant, abeyant or dormant titles (British, Commonwealth and European), together with the preparation of pedigrees for registration at H.M. College of Arms, London, as well as heraldry, armorial identification, and general historical questions.
Giles became interested in family history at a young age, and has taken his own research in many different directions. One particular pleasure was tracing his descent via a great-great-great grandmother back through a cadet branch of a North Country family to Tudor times and earlier. He strongly believes that we all have interesting ancestors, often through very 'ordinary' individuals, if we can but find them! Therein lies the great excitement, and challenge, of genealogy.
A genealogist for several heralds at the College of Arms over a number of years, and a former research assistant to the Earl of Shrewsbury in the House of Lords, he is an associate member of AGRA, a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Society of Genealogists, the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, and is a Freeman of the City of London.
