Before you start

The application includes the following sections:

  • About you (name and contact details).
  • Previous career (a brief overview of your career or working life before becoming a professional genealogist).
  • Personal statement (explaining how you came to be involved with family history, what has prompted you to apply to become a Member now and what you hope to achieve if your application is accepted).
  • Genealogy qualifications.
  • Continuing professional development activities (any relevant activities you are or have been involved in, including society memberships, other qualifications you have obtained, courses you have attended, articles and books you have written, and lectures you have given).
  • Areas of England and Wales in which you specialise as a professional researcher.
  • Archives you visit on a regular basis.
  • How long have you been carrying out paid research?
  • Name of employer (if employed to carry out genealogical research by a third party).
  • Counties in which Research Assignment is required (not applicable if you have the IHGS Diploma).
  • Number of hours per week working in this field.
  • Extra information that may support your application.

You will be required to upload relevant supporting documentation:

  • Evidence of any recognised genealogical qualifications (in the form of a digital image of the relevant certificate or other confirmation from the awarding body).
  • Examples of client reports, client communications and drop line pedigrees as specified in the Member application guidance notes.
  • CPD log (existing Associates).
  • A list of the files you are submitting and their relevance to your application. (If you are submitting three client reports you should clearly indicate which files relate to each report).

Please ensure that your supporting documentation is ready to upload before starting your application.

Assessment of your application will take into account your ability to understand and comply with AGRA's submission requirements. Please ensure you have read the Member application guidance notes before starting this application.
