Mathew Homewood MA, MPhil

Mathew Homewood

I have been working as a professional genealogist since graduating with an MA in History at the University of Sussex in 2008. Although I live in Sussex, I travel to record offices across the country in order to carry out research for clients.

My work involves anything from helping clients out with little sticking points in their family research, to producing full, detailed family trees. My business is called 'Traditional' Family Trees, as the trees I produce are drawn in the traditional style, using Indian ink on good quality Canford paper. These trees can be accompanied by a family narrative, written using the information found during the research, which really helps to flesh out the stories of your ancestors. My background in academia has been a great help in being able to write an informative but accessible narrative, and to be able to place a family history in its historical context.

As a result of researching family trees, I have often put clients in touch with living relatives they had either lost contact with, or didn't even know existed. Occasionally I have received specific requests to trace living relatives, and on one occasion reunited a gentleman with his mother after over 30 years apart.

I have also given workshops on beginners' guides to tracing your family tree, and am a regular speaker on various subjects at local history societies in Sussex.

In 2015 I completed an MPhil in History. My thesis was entitled 'Understanding Rural Migration in Late Nineteenth-Century England: Taking Parish Research to a New Level', where I investigated the migration habits of individuals from 36 villages spread across the country. My genealogy skills were vital to this research.

"Thank you very much indeed for your truly inspiring course. I wouldn’t have believed that anyone could keep a class so totally engaged for over five hours at a stretch. You are a brilliant teacher, and I am very grateful to LHG for giving me the opportunity to attend your course."
