Paul Carter

I am a genealogist, author, and software developer whose work explores how structured data and thoughtful design can illuminate the relationships between people and place.

As creator of Name & Place, I develop cloud-based software that helps researchers organise, interpret, and publish historical data with clarity and provenance. The platform supports a wide range of one-name, one-place, and local history projects, and has become a recognised tool within the research community.

My book Beyond the Tree: The Principles That Shape Name & Place reflects on the craft of digital history, examining how data, context, and narrative combine to produce meaningful discovery. A follow-up volume is now in development.

I focus on supporting others through writing, lecturing, and collaborative development rather than commissioned research. I have taught at the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies and the Society of Genealogists, spoken at major family and local history events, and written widely on the use of technology in historical research.

Further information is available on my website.

Paul has provided my family with invaluable assistance in uncovering the history of my grandfather's involvement in the Second World War. He kept us informed of his timely progress throughout a very thorough process and showed genuine warmth and interest in the story he uncovered. I will continue to work with Paul until there's nothing left to learn! I would like to pass on heartfelt thanks from the whole family to Paul and those he has worked with on our behalf.

Andrew, Surrey

Your report is excellent. I am so pleased with it. The images of the source document are a truly marvellous resource to have.

I am so grateful to you for all you have done in researching my grandfather's military career, and I am very pleased with the results. Thanks again.

J. Madden, London

I am delighted with the information you have found at Chatham, which was much more than I anticipated.  I immediately skimmed through the Royal Engineers diary and have today gone through it more carefully.  It really gives an insight into my grandfather's WW1 experiences.  I find the map particularly helpful in tracking the movements of this Company. Once again, very many thanks.
