I’m Sheila, a professional genealogist based in Suffolk, with over 30 years of experience in family history research. What began as a personal passion has become a lifelong commitment to uncovering the past and helping others discover their roots.
I studied with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, where I achieved the Higher Certificate in Heraldic and Genealogical Studies in 2024 and the Diploma in 2026. I’m proud to be an AGRA Associate (Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives), and I follow their code of conduct and ethics as part of my commitment to high standards and ongoing professional development.
My approach to genealogy is both methodical and personal. I love immersing myself in the research process — following leads, verifying details, and piecing together the lives and stories of those who came before us. Whether I’m investigating military records, newspaper archives, or parish registers, I work with care and precision to ensure my research is accurate and reliable.
As a Suffolk-based researcher, I have easy access to Suffolk Archives, and I’m often out visiting local churches, villages, and historical sites. I also work with a wide range of national databases and historical sources, combining traditional and digital research methods.
I have been amazed at the astonishing information and revelations about both my paternal and maternal family which Sheila Herd discovered during her search for my ancestors.
Sheila put flesh on known family stories handed down for generations and on families and their stories which had been forgotten, lost or were unknown. One was a Hereford husband who had disappeared, eventually declared dead, but was alive and living in poverty in London.
Sheila's research was meticulous, backed by newspaper reports, baptism, marriage and funeral records and the census going back to the first in 1841. Her research has been filed in a mighty folder of family trees, broken down under the names of individual members, all cross referenced, and with photographs where they exist.
Sheila's research has given me fantastic insight into my ancestors. It is to be followed by her looking for the full story of my husband's ancestors. I fully recommend her to anybody who wants to know the story of their ancestors.

Sheila has been absolutely fantastic is helping me find information about my late Grandfather. like many, the history is very complex and information is very limited. Sheila has been there to answer any question that "randomly" come to me. Sheila's passion and interest in family and social history is evident and take a real interest.
