I’ve been researching Family Trees for more than 30-years. When I started there was little option but to trudge to various Offices where family history records were stored and work my way through them page by page. Many’s the time I’ve spent several hours hard at work and come away with a single name, or sometimes nothing at all. You have to be dedicated (or simply daft) to keep at it.

Fortunately, that’s no longer the case. On-line research sites have revolutionised the pursuit. They take information from a wide variety of sources, digitise it, and present it to you as a single, searchable database in the comfort of your own home. Why would anyone want to go back?

It all sounds good, but, like everything else in life, it can be more difficult than you anticipate. I am still learning new things on an almost daily basis and I've been doing this a very, very, long time.

Online resources are excellent but they have their limitations and it is important to understand what those limitations are. The further you go back in time the greater the need to go back to the original documents.

Similarily DNA has revolutionised the pursuit but you have to understand what you are doing to make sense of it.
