I graduated from Nottingham University with a PhD in genetics and began training as a professional genealogist in 1979 at the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies in Canterbury. I obtained their Licentiateship in Genealogy and Heraldry (LHG) and became a professional researcher with Achievements Ltd of Canterbury, where I was the Research Manager.

Whilst at IHGS, as its Director, I headed a team which, in conjunction with hospital research departments, used genealogical research to trace the inheritance of genetic abnormalities to identify those who may be at risk. These included early onset Alzheimer's, ovarian cancer and Von-Hippel Lindau's disease. In 1994, I and others began a new genealogical research company, becoming Research Director of Ancestors Ltd of Canterbury and later, of Dover and then Folkestone. In 1999, I founded my own reseach company, Geoff Swinfield Genealogical Services.

I trained a number of other practising genealogists as well as numerous students who attended a wide range of educational courses run by IHGS, the Society of Genealogists (SoG) and London University (Birkbeck College). I have lectured widely on all aspects of genealogy, its sources and research techniques including the use and application of DNA testing to Genetic Genealogy.

I am a past Chair of AGRA's Board of Assessors and a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists, Retiring from professional genealogy in 2018, I am now very busy with continued research into my own family history, the Swinfield One-Name Study and DNA testing.
