Lisa Dunbar

Past Discoveries is a family and house history research service located close to the border of Hertfordshire and Essex ideally located within easy reach of the archives at Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and London.  Lisa is an experienced and qualified full-time genealogist and family historian and undertakes research for clients in the UK and abroad with many from Australia, Canada and the United States of America.  Lisa undertakes research at local record offices of as well as all of the major London archives, inclusive of The National Archives at Kew, The London Metropolitan Archives, The British Library, The Westminster Archives and the comprehensive library at the Society of Genealogists.

Lisa can undertake research for the whole of the UK due to the wealth of material that is available via online sources and at various national archives.   Other repositories further afield can be visited where needed. Lisa undertakes all types of genealogical research including small commissions, genealogical problem solving, one to one tutoring and guidance for the more advanced researcher, brickwalls and problems in your research, locational photography, look-ups and extractions of data at local archives as well as full multi-generational histories.  Lisa also undertakes research into manorial and land records.  The results of your research will be compiled into a fully referenced report and will include full citations of sources found. Where applicable I will provide a detailed pedigree chart.

I am committed to continuing my professional development and as such undertake many professional courses in specific areas of research to update my knowledge. I have completed the accredited Correspondence Course in Genealogy which was a comprehensive programme of study that I undertook over 3 years with the 'Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies'. This course covered all aspects of family history from basic records through to the more complex court records, manorial records and heraldry. Following an examination I was then awarded the Higher Certificate in Genealogy. I furthered my studies in genealogy and family history and in 2013 graduated from the IHGS (Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies) with the accredited Diploma in Genealogy (Dip Gen).

Bespoke Family History Storybooks

Lisa specialises in researching and compiling deluxe bound family history storybooks.  These storybooks cover all of the direct family lines inclusive of all of their children and are typically researched back to the sixteen great great grandparents from the source person, but one line could be taken back further if required.  The storybooks are fully illustrated throughout in full colour and include not only the historical  information found during the research online or at archives, but will include local history and  national history as well, so bringing your family history to life.  Historical timelines are included throughout the history as well as key historical facts showing how historical events impacted on the lives of your ancestors.  The history is researched and compiled with full citation of sources for the genealogical facts found during the research and will also include original images of documents where possible.  The full colour storybook will include pedigree charts throughout showing all of the people found in the history.

“We are writing to convey out heartfelt thanks for the recent works you have completed for us. Your reports have been thorough, in depth and quite revealing. The copy has been very professionally presented. In all you have presented us with four bundles of past family information each of which we feel is a ‘gem’ - we are constantly referring to them. I personally feel that your investigative work into the Waltham Abbey history was a masterpiece. We would have no hesitation in recommending you and your services. They are first class.”

“I've been researching my family tree now for around five years and inevitably came across many missing pieces of information within the tree which left me stumped and I'd tried everywhere. I was fortunate enough to find Past Discoveries the owner of which, a lady called Lisa, proved to be very knowledgeable in the field of genealogy and was very helpful indeed when it came to filling in those gaps I had in the tree. Each query I gave her was resolved both quickly and thoroughly and no stone was left unturned. The costs are very reasonable compared to other quotes I've received for similar work. I would not hesitate to recommend Past Discoveries to anyone who is interested in tracing those relatives who are proving difficult to trace.”

“Past Discoveries provided an excellent service, with a very detailed, well presented report when I wanted to surprise my wife with her family tree for her birthday.”
