Pollyanna Bristol-Murphy

As a professional genealogist and historical researcher, I have a particular interest in the social context that shapes family and property histories. I enjoy working with the wide range of records our ancestors left behind, using them to build a clearer picture of individuals, families and the communities in which they lived.

I undertake a broad range of research, including family history, lineage construction, house history, verification and extension of existing research, and the resolution of more complex or long-standing problems. Each project is approached on its own terms; in many cases it is the interplay between different record types that proves most informative. A sound understanding of sources, their location, and careful analysis and interpretation are essential to producing well-evidenced conclusions.

Based in Somerset, I regularly work in archives across the South West and South Central regions, including Gloucestershire, Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire and Hampshire, as well as The National Archives and repositories in London such as London Archives. Research frequently requires consultation of material held across multiple jurisdictions, including parish, county and ecclesiastical collections, and I am well placed to work flexibly across these repositories.

I have been researching family history for over eighteen years, initially for my own family and, over the past seven years, on a professional basis for clients. I hold a degree in Economic History from the London School of Economics, and have completed the correspondence course and Diploma in Genealogy (DipGen) with the Institute of Heraldry and Genealogical Studies.

I welcome enquiries and would be pleased to discuss potential research projects.
